In celebration of the college’s 40th anniversary and UCSD’s 50th anniversary, John W. Marshall visited the annual Scholar and Citizen Reception on June 2, 2011. John W. Marshall, who served high office in the cabinet under two Virginia governors, has led a long career in the public service sector. As the son of Justice Thurgood Marshall, Mr. Marshall he help celebrate our college’s anniversary and the ties to our distinguished namesake. Mr. Marshall and the Marshall family were presented the Marshall College Medal – the highest honor the college awards. The Awards Night event in the UCSD Faculty Club hosted over 120 students, staff, faculty and invited alumni from the community.

Author, documentarian and Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr gives a stirring address on race in the United States with a look at the genealogy and genetics in African-American history. Gates is presented by the Council of Provosts, Helen Edison Lecture Series, and Thurgood Marshall College at UC San Diego.

Alphonse Fletcher University Professor and Director of the W.E.B. Du Bois Institute at Harvard, Dr. Gates is one of the leading African American scholars in the United States. The author of countless books and prominent essays, he has written and produced for PBS several outstanding documentaries, among them African American Lives and American Behind the Color Line.
