Inside the Beltway. Odds are good you're headed toward a brilliant Washington career when you start out in the White House. That’s exactly where Anne Cannon MacMillian found herself as a college junior, interning through the University of California’s UCDC program .
She has since served as legislative director for California Congressman Dennis Cardoza and as agricultural policy advisor to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. This summer, after completing a law degree at George Washington University, MacMillian moved from Capitol Hill to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. She’s now senior advisor to Secretary of Agriculture Torn Vileack, with particular responsibilities in child nutrition and food safety. More... » |
MacMillian finds Washington life full of unforgettable moments, from participating in major congressional issues to just walking through the Capitol everyday to work. “That’s a simple joy that never gets old," she says. And she believes her UCSD experience made it all possible. She especially appreciates “faking fantastic political science courses from fantastic professors" who confirmed her interest in government service. The UCDC internship iced the cake, introducing her to people who facilitated her return to Washington after graduation.
“The UCDC program was awesome. It's the main reason I’m here," MacMillian says, "It’s never too early to make those contacts."

Kate Maull, TMC ’05
While studying the politics of race and gender at UCSD, Maull was especially inspired as an undergraduate by the exemplary teaching of Ashanti Houston Hands, ’93: “She’s an outstanding professional woman, but also a mother with a wonderful family. I learned a great deal from her. She was strong, she was thoughtful, she was open to new ideas.”
Then Maull smiles and quotes former Dean Hands quoting Gandhi, which she says happened quite often during her years as an undergrad in San Diego.

The resulting hypoxic “dead zone ” in the Gulf of Mexico propelled him into action, launched him on the journey of a lifetime, and helped to form the foundation for Below the Surface .
