John Muir College – Muir Peer Program

Mentor Information

Muir College would like to offer you the opportunity to connect with an incoming freshman looking for help with adjusting to life at UCSD!  You will be matched with a first-year student (mentee) who wants to have a personal relationship with a continuing student from Muir.  If they have a special need or concern, they can come to you.

Participation in the Muir Peer Program is considered voluntary community service.  You are important to Muir College!  Participation in this program will enhance not only another student’s experience at Muir, but also your own.

What is a mentor?

A mentor is a Muir College continuing student who is willing to go the extra mile for an incoming first-year student.  He/she is willing to be a friend, answer questions, and be a guide.  Most importantly, a mentor serves as a role model and acts as a resource.

How does the Muir Peer Mentor Program work?

You will be matched with a mentee of similar interests and goals. After the initial kick-off  meeting, it will be up to you and your mentee to set up at least one in-person meeting per month throughout Fall Quarter.

As a MENTOR in the Muir Peer Program, you will be expected to:

  • Respond to your mentee’s emails, and/or phone calls as soon as they contact you.
  • Contact your mentee immediately if your contact information changes at any time.
  • Meet with your mentee at least once per month or as needed throughout their first quarter at UCSD.
  • Call your mentee to let him/her know if you cannot make a meeting time.
  • Contact your mentee, either by phone or in person, if you have not heard from him/her.
  • Contact the Muir Peer Program Coordinator (Muir Outreach at
    muiroutreach@ucsd.edu) if you are not satisfied with the program at any time.
  • Complete evaluations of the program as they are sent to you.
