General Education and Transfer Agreements

The number of GE's you must complete depends your specific transfer agreement and the courses you completed at your previous institution(s). Learn more about transfer agreements below.

IGETC

• Full completion of lower-division GE requirements if IGETC is certified by a California Community College.
• GE's for IGETC Transfers:

  • 2 four-unit upper-division courses outside your major field of study, including one upper division writing-intensive course

  • All IGETC requirements must be completed prior to transferring to UC San Diego.

TAG

• Full completion of IGETC, as certified by your community college, is required. See IGETC above.

UC Reciprocity

• Full completion of lower-division GE requirements if you have completed all lower-division general education/breadth requirements at another UC campus.
• GE's for UC Reciprocity Transfers:

  • 2 four-unit upper-division courses outside your major field of study, including one upper division writing-intensive course

  • All lower-division general education/breadth requirements must be completed prior to transferring to UC San Diego.

UCSD Articulation Breadth Agreement

• If you did not complete any of the above transfer programs, you are an "Articulation" transfer student.
• GE's for Articulation Transfers:

  • 2 six-unit lower-division courses, DOC 2 and DOC 3: "Justice" and "Imagination," completed after transfer

  • 2 four-unit upper-division courses outside your major field of study, including one upper division writing-intensive course

  • Additional lower-division courses may be required after transfer.

  • An Academic Counselor will review your transfer work to determine which lower-division and upper-division GE's have been fulfilled.
