As the third undergraduate college established at UC San Diego, Thurgood Marshall College holds a unique place in the university’s history. The college was founded 40 years ago and was meant to focus on historical and classical studies. But events of the time reshaped the college’s philosophy to focus on diversity and opportunities for underrepresented students. That spirit of community carries on today, both at TMC and at UC San Diego. TMC has also spent the last four decades emphasizing the importance of the scholar and the citizen, teaching students that social responsibility and academic excellence go hand-in-hand. As TMC celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, and the university celebrates its 50th year, it’s an ideal time to reflect and celebrate our growth and accomplishments, and also look ahead to the future and our many successes still to come.
