Welcome/Intro/Mission Statement

California’s dynamic social landscape reflects the varied cultural traditions and national origins of its inhabitants, leading many Californians to be concerned about human rights in the lands of their ancestors. From personal experience they know that human rights problems can influence international migration and cultural exchange at home and abroad.

The symposium on Human Rights and Global Citizenship, sponsored jointly by Eleanor Roosevelt and Thurgood Marshall Colleges, addresses these interlocking themes as part of International Education Week, November 17-21, 2008. The week’s programs address the rights of asylum seekers and victims of global trafficking (especially children), migration and citizenship in our hemisphere, and the lives of women in war-torn Iraq. The program celebrates the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and ERC’s 20th anniversary, and anticipates TMC’s 40th anniversary beginning in fall 2009.
